IRI - Registration

This rating can be obtained as an addition to the FI(A) rating or as a stand-alone instructor rating and will allow the holder to instruct towards the issue, revalidation and renewal of IR on the appropriate aircraft.

The teaching and learning module and the instrument theoretical training will be carried out in the classroom in our main training facility at Keilir Academy in Ásbrú. The whole course usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to complete depending on different factors.

The instrument flight training is usually split as 5 hours in the FNPTII and 5 hours in the DA40.

Requirements

An applicant for an IRI(A) certificate shall:

  • In case of applicants that do not hold a FI(A) certificate, have completed at least 800 hours of flight time under IFR, of which at least 400 hours shall be in aeroplanes
  • In case of applicants that hold a FI(A) certificate, have completed at least 200 hours of flight time under IFR, of which up to 50 hours may be instrument ground time in an FFS, an FTD 2/3 or FNPT II;
  • In the case of applicants of an IRI(A) for multi-engine aeroplanes, meet the requirements of paragraphs FCL.915.CRI(a), FCL.930.CRI and FCL.935
  • Have attained the age of 18 years
  • hold a valid medical certificate
  • Hold at least level 4 language proficiency in Icelandic or English
  • hold at least the licence and ratings for which flight instruction is to be given;
  • have completed at least 15 hours of flight as a pilot on the class or type of aircraft on which flight instruction is to be given, of which a maximum of 7 hours may be in an FSTD representing the class or type of aircraft, if applicable or passed an assessment of competence for the relevant category of instructor on that class or type of aircraft
  • be entitled to act as PIC on the aircraft during such flight instruction

Summary of Minimum Training Hours

The training course includes:

  1. At least 25 hours of teaching and learning
  2. 10 hours of technical training, including revision of instrument theoretical knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom instructional skills;
  3. at least 10 hours of flight instruction on an aeroplane, FFS, FTD 2/3 or FPNT II. In the case of applicants holding an FI(A) certificate, these hours are reduced to 5

Credits for Previous Experience

  1. Applicants who are holders of other Instructor certificates, in accordance with Subpart J of EASA Part FCL regulation, may be credited with the Teaching and Learning skills, already demonstrated for the instructor certificate held.
  2. In case of applicants that hold a FI(A) certificate Flight instruction can be reduced to 5 hours
