In the recent days, Birta Óskarsdóttir, a 21-year-old student pilot at the Iceland Aviation Academy, went on an unforgettable flight over the eruption in Geldingadalur. This was no ordinary flight because Birta sat in the captain's seat herself taking on her skill test flight for her commercial pilot‘s licence with an examiner by her side. The Integrated Professional Pilot Program at Iceland Aviation Academy is a highly structured and comprehensive program that is designed for students with no or limited previous flight experience.

Birta had completed theoretical exams and practical training for the commercial pilot license and only had the skill test left to get her license. The purpose of the skill test is to confirm that the applicant is able to operate the aircraft with the utmost safety, so that neither he, his passengers nor other air traffic is at risk.

It is safe to say that Birta was given a challenging task in her skill test flight, because there is a great demand for flying over the eruption. Only eight aircraft are allowed into the airspace delegated for observing the eruption at the same time. Therefore, you need to be very careful, maintain good radio communication as well as monitor other aircraft in the vicinity and fly the aircraft with great accuracy.

When asked about the experience, Birta said that it was absolutely amazing and that it was very exciting to fly over the magnificent eruption and be able to see it with her own eyes from above. Everything went according to plan and Birta passed the exam with excellence and can now call herself a commercial pilot.

We sincerely congratulate Birta on this achievement and look forward following this newly graduated commercial pilot from the Iceland Aviation Academy in the future.

The Iceland Aviation Academy’s next group of professional pilot students starts August 30th is now open for applications. We encourage applicants to submit their applications in a timely manner and look forward to welcoming a new group of student pilots to the academy.
