| Námskeiðslýsing: | This class provides instruction in general chemistry with special emphasis on aspects relevant to the fields of energy technology and engineering. Incoming students
are required to have a basic understanding of atomic and molecular structures and bonding, for example from the Materials course. Areas covered include the Periodic Table, chemical bonding, chemical nomenclature, stoichiometric calculations, the gas laws, energy in chemical reactions, chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium (including solubility and acid/base equilibria), and electrochemistry. The class is organized as a combination of lectures and laboratory sessions. Organic chemistry is taught in a separate course. |

| Hæfnisviðmið: | Students will acquire a solid understanding of principles in general chemistry and are able to solve chemical problems and calculations in the fields covered. Students are able to understand literature on current problems in chemical research as they relate to the area of energy technology and engineering. Students gain experience in practical laboratory work including safe work practices, the planning and execution of experiments as well as the interpretation and communication of results according to international scientific practice. | |
