Keilir Aviation Academy has a fleet consisting entirely of state-of-the-art Diamond aircraft. In contrast to many other flight schools that utilize older aircraft, all our planes are fuel-efficient and reliable. This is one of the reasons that Keilir Aviation Academy is able to offer our training programs at a very competitive price. 

Just as it is throughout the aviation industry, safety is our number one priority at Keilir Aviation Academy. This has made Diamond aircraft the logical choice when selecting a manufacturer for our fleet. The body of Diamond aircraft is composed of robust and highly durable composite fibers, ensuring a particularly sturdy design, a fact well known to the manufacturers of larger modern aircraft such as the Boeing 787, mainly constructed from similar fibers. The properties of the material make it possible to create aircraft that are not only exceptionally strong but also more aerodynamic.

Our smallest aircraft is the Diamond DA20. It is equipped with two seats and a 125 horsepower engine that uses 22 liters/5.8 gallons of fuel per hour, making it the perfect training aircraft.  The US Air Force uses these for their pilots’ initial flight training. The aircraft is designed for a superb visual outlook and great performance – ensuring every flight is something to look forward to.

Most of our DA20´s are equipped with Garmin G500 glass cockpit. This allows for a smooth transition onto the DA40 and DA42.

The DA40 has four seats and is equipped with Garmin G1000 glass cockpit, making it perfect for flying under instrument conditions. The instrument layout resembles that used on many modern airliners, consequently making a future transition easier. The engine is made by Thielert and provides 135 horsepower. Furthermore, the engine is controlled by FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) to maximize performance and economy. You will find exactly the same type of system in a modern jet. These engines use 50% less fuel than similar sized four-seat aircraft and the increasingly important carbon footprint is nothing but a fraction of that of other older aircraft engines. Noise is also minimal in comparison with similar sized aircraft, making it friendly to both the environment and your ears.

Diamond DA42 NG

The DA42 has four seats.  The two 167 horsepower engines have a jet fuel consumption of only 23 liters/5.9 gallons per engine per hour at 70% power - close to 40% less fuel per hour than normal flight training aircraft of similar size. The DA42 NG is the only training aircraft in this category certified for flight into known icing conditions. This is a very important factor when training in the Icelandic meteorological environment. 

The avionics are very advanced and include a digital autopilot, similar to modern day jet airliners. The SVS (Synthetic Vision System) provides optimum situational awareness and is extremely useful in the mountainous areas of Iceland. A flight from our base in Keflavik to Akureyri in the North takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. The twin engine DA42 can fly on one engine over any mountain or glacier in Iceland. This is considerably higher than similar twin-engine trainers can offer. The engines are very simple to operate; you only need one action on this twin-engine aircraft to shut an engine down and secure it for the continuation of the flight on the remaining one. To start an engine again, you only need two separate actions: Power lever - IDLE, and engine master switch - ON. It's really that simple.

Our Redbird MCX simulator is a full-motion training device and used continuously throughout the training. It is excellent for initial Instrument training (IFR) since it allows training for specific scenarios to be conducted in a relaxed environment with an instructor and is a great supplement to the ordinary flight training. Although a full motion simulator is not required at this stage of training it adds another lever of realism to the training experience and great value for the student. The simulator has multiple hardware modules and the cockpit can be configured for Diamond DA20, DA40 or DA42 training within a few minutes. 

The simulator is conveniently located at our main building - allowing students easy access.

The transition from flying single pilot piston aircraft to a turbojet aircraft at higher speeds with far greater momentum and more advanced systems is challenging. Much of the Airline Transport Pilot theory has been up to this point untried and in the Boeing simulator we get the chance to recap some of the fundamental elements of flying a turbojet aircraft while putting it into the perspective of the multi-crew airline operation.
